Over the past few months, I've tried some DIY things around our apartment. To give you a feel for the vibe of our apartment so you can understand what we have to work with, I decided I should take some pictures of it so you can see what it looks like. I feel the need to add that we have lots of hand me down furniture from Mom and Dad and have tried to decorate on a budget. Yes, I know some things look super cheap (which they are!) but I'm hesitant to go buy all new furniture until we have a house. With that being said, here's the apartment:

Our bedroom again (Notice my Kohl's bedding and Kohl's pictures! Sean is an assistant manager at the one here in Ankeny, and I tend to spend more than I should there!):
Our bedroom again (My Mom found me that massive piece of furniture for $100 a few years ago! Also, can you tell I'm watching Transformers 2 tonight?):

So now that you have a feel for where we live, let me get started with the Pinterest projects!
Pinterest Idea #14:
"Mirror Paint Lamps"
My attempt:
So when I got my first big girl apartment a few years ago, my Mom and Dad gave me their old living room furniture, which included the lamps. While I was really grateful, the lamps were a little dated for my style. Instead of spending $100 a piece, I decided to try and spruce up my Mom's lamps by painting them and getting some new shades. I think they turned out pretty good and the spray paint only cost me $4 and each lamp shade was $19.99 at Menard's. For about $45, they were much cheaper then new lamps!
Before (This picture is from my apartment when I lived in Kansas City, but it's the only picture I had with the old lamps. They were gold with the pleated shades):

Pinterest Idea #15
"Earring Holder"
My attempt:
When I first saw this idea for an earring holder, I was so excited since I have so many pairs of earrings and didn't have a place to display them (so I never wore them). I had every intention of buying a frame from an antique store or something and then getting a metal grate like the one in the picture above, but I was bored one day and got creative. Instead of making something exactly like on Pinterest, this pin inspired me to do something a little different. I had an old canvas picture from when I had different bedding so I used that as the backboard for the earrings. I also had a bunch of random colored ribbon and kind of just went with it. I nailed the ribbon into the back of the canvas board (on the wooden sides), and voila! It's not as sturdy as the version above, but it works!
My earring holder:

And because I made an earring holder, I used an old shower curtain rod for a necklace rack too!:
Pinterest Idea #16:
"Musty Towels"
My attempt:
THIS WORKS! Sean and I had a bunch of towels that started to smell musty, even after we washed them. After finding this awesome idea, I figured I'd give it a shot instead of throwing half of our towels out. There is nothing worse then getting out of the shower and grabbing your towel that reeks! All you have to do is set your washing machine to hot water and run your towels through a full cycle with 1 cup of vinegar added. Once the washer is done, run it again with 1 cup of baking soda. After the second cycle is done, put the towels in the dryer and it's magic!
Since I had extra smelly towels, I ended up using whatever I had left of my vinegar and baking soda (which was more than 1 cup each):
Since my dog, Hootie, is begging me to play with him, I suppose this is the end of my updates for today! Au revoir!
